For over four decades, the Pinetrees Longboard Classic has been a beloved gathering of surfers, family, and community at one of Kaua‘i’s most iconic breaks. What started as a grassroots event has grown into a legendary competition, celebrating the art of traditional longboarding while keeping the island’s surf culture alive.
Through the years, the contest has seen its fair share of legendary competitors, including Herbie Fletcher and Papa Sau, whose timeless style and aloha spirit have inspired generations of surfers. Today, the event continues to showcase the best of longboarding, from seasoned pros to stoked groms, all sharing waves in the spirit of friendly competition and camaraderie.
Now in its 44th year, the Pinetrees Longboard Classic remains a highlight of Kaua‘i’s surf calendar—where style, tradition, and community come together for an unforgettable weekend in the lineup.
Kaua‘i Boardriders Club, a program offered by HSA, officially adopted the Pinetrees Longboard Classic in 2025. By bringing this iconic event under the HSA umbrella, its legacy is secured for future generations, ensuring that longboarding traditions, community spirit, and friendly competition continue to thrive at one of Kaua‘i’s most cherished surf breaks.

“This picture was taken at the very first one. Herbie Fletcher won it on my board. Papa Sau, Bone, just a small group of the boys. No prizes just a fun sorta competition”
